Since 2008, Matthews has been the head of Illustration and Embroidery for the courier bag company, Seagull Bags. The company offers the option of adding custom imagery to their bags using non-digitized embroidery and applique. This very detailed medium involves designing images in Adobe Illustrator and translating them into fabric-and-thread by hand. The appliqué pieces are cut by hand, and the stitches are sewn using a single needle industrial machine. Some of Matthews' embroidery pieces are more like 'paintings' in thread, like the one below.
